After a thrilling opening 20 minutes at the Veltins Arena, Schalke's Farfan put the home side ahead after converting Lewis Holtby's square ball into an empty net. Freiburg hit back 7 minutes later, when Jan Rosenthal volleyed Max Kruse's cross into the bottom left hand corner from just outside the 18 yard box. Jonathan Schmid then put the away side in front 10 minutes before half time, and Jan Rosenthal picked up his second of the game in the 62nd minute with a left-footed strike from just outside the box. Jan Rosenthal and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar were then both shown second yellow cards and subsequent red cards during the last ten minutes for separate incidents.
